The Faculty of Basic Sciences was established with department of mathematics as the only department in the year 2005. With an aim to impart quality teaching and research in physical sciences, Department of Chemistry and Physics were established as a part of the faculty in the year 2011. The faculty currently offers post-graduate courses in three disciplines of chemistry, mathematics and physics.

In addition to catering to the teaching at the post-graduate level, the faculty of basic sciences also offers doctoral programmes in chemistry, mathematics and physics. Research and innovation in the frontier areas of modern sciences forms an integral part of the academic activity at the faculty level. Various research thrust of the teaching staff of the faculty include materials for energy, natural products and medicinal chemistry, green and sustainable chemistry, synthesis, catalysis and mechanisms, optoelectronic devices, photovoltaics, computational materials, sensors, high energy physics, number theory, fluid mechanics, fuzzy sets & logic, algebra, analysis, graph theory and decision making. Teachers have also been able to receive grants from government and non-government funding agencies to conduct research.

Recently, the Faculty has branched out by setting up a new Centre for Advanced Research to work in interdisciplinary manner in the frontier areas of basic sciences. Teachers of the faculty have received fellowships and honours from various academic bodies.
