4. Brief history of the Department

The Department of Statistics made its beginning in October 2021 under the stewardship of Prof. Vandana Upadhyay as the Coordinator, an academician and educator from the Department of Economics, Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills, Doimukh. In the history of Rajiv Gandhi University, the teaching of the subject Statistics began for the first time in Post Graduate level as M.Sc. programme. Another important activity that has taken place in the department in 2022 is the opening of the Ph.D. programme. At present, Dr. Ningthoukhongjam Vikimchandra Singh is the faculty member who is responsible for both teaching and research.

The department has hosted Prof. Prof. Gyan Prakash Singh (BHU), Prof. S.K. Singh (BHU), Prof. Kishore Kumar Das (Guwahati University), Prof. Indranil Mukhopadhyay (ISI, Kolkata) and Dr. Piyush Kant Rai (BHU) as visiting Professors in the department of Statistics. These visiting Professors have been regularly engaging the students in their M.Sc. programme.

The main objective of the Department has been to impart socially relevant education at the Post Graduate level by judicious mix of theory and empiricism. The course of study and research offering of the department has been designed to meet this objective. The faculty members of the Department have been deeply involved in the study of different developmental issues, especially in regard to the North Eastern Region. The specific issues that have attracted research attention are Spatial Statistics, Spatio-Temporal Statistics, Disease mapping.

1. A three-day workshop on Statistics and Data Handling through Excel and SPSS (For Faculty and Researcher) was held in the Department of Economics from 18^th to 20^th May, 2022. The workshop was jointly organized by the Center for Development Studies, Department of Economics, Department of Statistics and Department of Zoology, RGU. Resource persons had come from renowned Universities of India.
